Contrairement aux chansons habituelles, "Miss You" a nécessité le recrutement de nouveaux musiciens, Ian McLagan à l'orgue Wurlitzer, Mel Collins au saxo,et Sugar Blue, repéré par un membre de la maison de disques alors qu'il jouait dans le métro de Paris, à l'harmonica.
On trouve différentes longueurs pour "Miss You", dont une version de 8min mixée par Bob Clearmoutain, avec ajout de solos de guitare et de saxo, et quelques couplets supplémentaires, destinée aux clubs et sorti sur vinyle rose et inédite en CD.
Genèse :
Tout a commencé par un jam entre Jagger et le clavier Billy Preston, alors que le groupe s'apprêtait à donner une série de concerts au club El Mocambo en mars 77. Pourtant, Richards est aussi crédité, comme c'est le cas pour toutes les chansons des Stones,sans exception. Le fait que Richards venait de se faire arrêter pour détention de drogues au Canada ne l'a pas vraiment rendu concentré au travail.
Pourtant, Jagger, Wood et Richards ne voient pas la chanson de la même manière. Si les deux premiers avancent que "Miss You" n'a pas été composée dans le but d'être une chanson disco, Richards avance le contraire. Charlie Watts ménage la chèvre et le chou en disant que beaucoup de chansons de l'album "Some Girls" ont été influencées par le fait que le groupe se rendait beaucoup en clubs, où on passait du disco à tours de bras, notamment sur le jeu de batterie et la ligne de basse. C'est d'ailleurs une des rares chansons des Stones rythmée par la ligne de basse et non pas par un riff de guitare de Richards.
Le jour où ils ont enregistré "Miss You", leur est venue l'idée de "Start Me Up".
C'est le premier numéro 1 des charts pour les Stones au Billboard 100.
Reprises :
Sugar Blue et Etta James l'ont reprise, ainsi que Musiq Soulchild. "Weird Al" Yankovic a parodié la chanson, mâtinée de polka, pour donner "The Hot Rocks Polka". DrDre l'a remixée pour la BO d'Austin Powers, Goldmember, et Van Halen a repris sa ligne de basse sur "Push Comes to Shove"
